Friendship, forgiveness, hope, and courage take centre stage in I’ve Got To Escape, a powerful stage play by Yorkshire author Kelvin Rush, adapted from his original musical Escaping: The Musical.
Set in December 2019 inside Butterworth Care Home in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, this moving drama follows the lives of residents Morag and Betty, whose unlikely friendship is tested when long-buried secrets from the past begin to surface. As painful memories emerge, emotions run high, forcing both women to confront truths they never expected to revisit.
When Morag’s late husband Stanley appears in a dream, the story takes an uplifting and imaginative turn. A secret trip to Stanley’s grave leads to an unforgettable birthday celebration unlike anything they could ever have imagined, where love, remembrance, and friendship transcend the boundaries between life and death.
Alongside this heartfelt story runs the courageous journey of staff nurse Bernie. Admired by residents for her kindness and compassion, Bernie secretly lives in fear of her violent estranged husband, Ralph. As his obsession spirals out of control, the care home becomes the setting for a dramatic and emotional confrontation that will change the lives of everyone involved.
Balancing humour, warmth, suspense, and deeply emotional moments, I’ve Got To Escape explores friendship, domestic abuse, loss, forgiveness, and the extraordinary strength of ordinary people.
A compelling read for theatre lovers, drama enthusiasts, and anyone who enjoys powerful character-driven storytelling.
